Deploying talents

Knowledge Center: Being Creative

Putting your talents to use in volunteering

The most rewarding volunteer work is work that allows you to do what you are good at. That sounds logical, but in practice, talents are often overlooked—by organizations that fail to ask the right questions, and by volunteers who underestimate themselves.

What are your talents?

Talent isn't just what you’ve learned at school or in your job. It’s also what you do effortlessly, what others ask you for help with, and what energizes you rather than draining you.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you do that others find difficult?
  • What do people ask you for help with?
  • What do you enjoy doing, even when no one is watching?

The answers to these questions point toward your talents.

From talent to contribution

Talents can be translated into concrete contributions. Here are a few examples:

  • Are you good at drawing or photography? Many organizations are looking for someone to create communication materials.
  • Do you enjoy cooking? Food banks, community restaurants, and organizations for the elderly need people in the kitchen.
  • Do you have technical aptitude? You could help with websites, equipment, or digital tools.
  • Are you good with people? Roles involving guidance, reception, or coaching require good people skills.
  • Do you enjoy physical activity or sports? Sports organizations and exercise programs are always looking for volunteers.

Don't be afraid to speak up

Many people feel uncomfortable stating what they are good at. But if you want to do volunteer work that truly suits you, you need to be willing to have that conversation with a coordinator or organization.

Be specific about what you have to offer: "I’m a graphic designer by trade and would love to use those skills for a good cause." Or: "I taught for years and want to put that talent to use."

Talents you want to develop

Volunteering is also a great way to discover new talents. Have you always wanted to learn something new—such as coaching others, giving presentations, or leading a project—but never had the chance? Many organizations welcome volunteers who are eager to learn, provided the arrangements are well-aligned.
