As a Home-Start volunteer, you are there for a parent who could temporarily use some support. You listen, think along, and stand alongside the other person.

Interesting or nice about this vacancy

As a Home-Start volunteer, you are there for parent(s) who could use a helping hand. One volunteer says about this: "It is not so much that people are parenting incorrectly and therefore need help. The problem is often that they are doing it alone and don't know exactly how to do it. In that case, it is helpful to be able to chat with someone and share your story. If you can release some tension, there is room to think again. And to parent the way you want to do it yourself, and not the way you think it's supposed to be done."

What we offer:

  • Fun and useful volunteer work.
  • Contact with parents and children.
  • Support and guidance by a coordinator.
  • Training.
  • Be part of an enthusiastic group of volunteers

Tasks and duties

A family, a job, the household, illness—sometimes parents have to perform at their best. Especially when you can't fall back on support from family, friends, or neighbors.

Home-Start's 'gold' is its volunteers, who have experience raising children. Every week, a volunteer comes to provide exactly the support needed for the family to get through this period of 'peak stress'. Parents can share their story, receive a helping hand, or get practical tips and assistance with local contacts.

For one half-day per week, you offer the family support that directly addresses the family's needs, for example:

  • Offering a listening ear without judgment
  • Having coffee together
  • Take a walk
  • Go to the playground or petting zoo
  • Sometimes accompany me to meetings at school if desired
  • Helping to make contacts in the neighborhood
  • Provide practical help with childcare, for example to a family where a baby has just been born or if there are questions regarding everyday situations such as eating, playing, and sleeping.

Skills and qualities

  • Someone who is willing to commit to this program for a longer period and can thereby be a reliable support for a family.
  • Someone who has experience raising children. This can be experience from work, education, parenthood, grandparenting, or being an aunt or uncle.
  • Someone who is stable, patient, flexible, and has good people skills.
  • Someone who 'can be there', does not judge quickly, and has a positive outlook on life.

Additional information

The next training is in the autumn; dates are yet to be scheduled. After the training, there are follow-up meetings every 8 weeks to share your experiences with other volunteers. Additionally, the coordinator is available for individual questions and support.

Would you like more information or would you like to register? Please contact one of the coordinators at Home-Start Groningen.
