About De Luisterlijn

In the dead of night, in the early morning, or on a public holiday. The Listening Line is available day and night, all year round, for people in need of a confidential conversation. Do you really want to make a difference for someone else? Then the Listening Line is looking for you. As a volunteer, you offer a listening ear to people with worries, sadness, and problems. By phone, chat, or email, you are there for anyone who wants to unburden their heart anonymously. You do this at a time and place that suits you.

What's in it for you?

  • Meaningful conversations that enrich you too
  • Free professional training in listening and conversation techniques
  • A close-knit team of volunteers and ongoing support
  • Inspiring meetings on topics such as loneliness, depression, and loss
  • Great satisfaction; with this volunteer work, you really make a difference for others
  • A certificate upon completion of the training.

What do we ask of you?

  • An open and empathetic attitude
  • No specific prior education
  • Average availability of 4 hours per week (flexible scheduling)
  • Willingness to work a 2-hour night shift twice a month (or once) 4 hours)
  • Participation in a (free) training in your area.

Anne, a volunteer for five years:

“The conversations are sometimes intense; people often call to talk about loneliness, mental health issues, or difficult relationships. But what you get in return is priceless: you truly help someone, simply by listening.”
