In 2012, the Grafisch Centrum Groningen celebrated its 50th anniversary. In the early 1960s, a number of members of De Ploeg, led by Johann Faber and Jan van der Baan, decided to establish their own graphic workshop. In doing so, they combined their love for printmaking with the desire to work together.
The shared studio started small, with an Alauzet lithographic press, but the Grafisch Centrum soon began to house every type of press a printmaker could wish for. Ties with De Ploeg were cautiously severed in late 1970. Due to the amount of organization the Grafisch Centrum entailed, it proved better to make it an independent foundation. In addition to the Ploeg artists, who remained loyal users, a younger generation of artists found their way to the Graphic Centre.
Course Offerings
Over the years, the objectives were broadened: alongside the opportunity to work freely, the need to impart knowledge soon arose. This laid the foundation for the flourishing range of courses that still characterizes the Graphic Centre.
Countless students have been introduced to printmaking there over the years, and many became hooked on a particular technique for life.
