SchuldHulpMaatje Gemeente Groningen is there for everyone facing financial difficulties. Inspired by the Gospel, the goal of SchuldHulpMaatje Gemeente Groningen is to support people with (imminent) debts in getting their finances in order and to work together towards financial self-reliance. SchuldHulpMaatje Groningen is part of the national network of Vereniging SchuldHulpMaatje Nederland and was founded on March 3, 2021. SchuldHulpMaatje does not aim to replace professional debt counseling, but rather seeks to be an accessible supplement. In practice, it has been shown that early intervention by a SchuldHulpMaatje can prevent the need for professional debt counseling in many situations. Our mission, short and powerful:
• Contribute to a debt-free life for people;
• Prevent and sustainably resolve debt problems;
• Help based on connection between people;
• Reaching people in imminent financial distress early;
• Well-trained volunteers whose help complements that of civil service professionals.
In the Netherlands, 1 in 5 households struggles with debt. It is concerning that only a limited number of them find their way to assistance. Trained and certified buddies from SchuldHulpMaatje Gemeente Groningen try to stand alongside those seeking help and assist them, without blame or judgment, in getting their affairs in order. The slogan of SchuldHulpMaatje Nederland is: “Together we can do it!” and that is also what we believe in Groningen. In summary, a Buddy • brings an overview of the financial situation together with the person seeking help; • creates an action plan together with the person seeking help; • gets to work with the person seeking help to eliminate debts; • teaches budgeting and helps with behavioral change; • offers a listening ear and encouragement. In principle, new buddies are trained every year to effectively guide people seeking help.
