Interesting or nice about this vacancy
Adults and children learning Dutch as a second language or who are functionally illiterate benefit from reading together. It helps them practice the language in a fun and accessible way. For the children, it is primarily a relaxing moment after a busy school day.
Tasks and duties
We are looking for volunteers who have time to enjoy reading together with a child or parent. This can be done one-on-one or in a small group, whichever feels best. You can read anything: a book, a magazine, a short story, or even the rules of a game that you can play together afterwards. The focus is not on reading aloud, but rather on reading comprehension and enjoying the process. Reading material is available, but going to the library together to pick out a nice book is also an option. After reading a bit, you discuss what you have read together.
The reading takes place at the Vensterschool in Selwerd. The days and times are flexible and we coordinate them together. For the children, it is nice after 2:00 PM because of school. For parents, however, it is preferable to read before 2:00 PM so that they can pick up their children afterwards.
Skills and qualities
- You enjoy reading together.
- You are social and enjoy having a chat with others.
- You have patience and enjoy working with language.
- Experience is not necessary; motivation is!
