In April 2024, the doors opened to the first Maggie's Center in the Netherlands, located in Groningen. The center offers a healing and home-like environment where people who have (had) cancer, along with their partners, family members, and friends, can access a comprehensive range of psychosocial support and guidance free of charge, complementing existing initiatives. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We are looking for an enthusiastic host or hostess who can contribute to this and ensure a warm welcome.
We offer:

  • Recognition for your efforts and the impact you make.
  • A supportive and inclusive work environment where volunteers are valued and encouraged.
  • The opportunity to help build the first Maggie's Center in the Netherlands.
  • A warm, home-like work environment.
  • Training and education in specific skills.
  • A travel allowance of 0.21 cents per km, with a maximum of 22 km one-way; parking is not available at the center, therefore we encourage the use of bicycles or public transport.

Tasks and duties

As a host/hostess, you can;

  • Ensuring a warm welcome, so that visitors can feel at home.
  • Offering a cup of coffee or tea and having a chat with the visitors.
  • Explain the possibilities within our center.
  • Assessing the reasons why visitors come to the center and anticipating them.
  • Refer a visitor to the relevant professional where necessary.
  • Ensuring a clean, well-maintained, tidy, and welcoming center.
  • Ensure that all supplies are in order and remain replenished.

Skills and qualities

  • Has an affinity with our target group and the field of work.
  • Possesses empathy and a sense of responsibility.
  • Is visitor-oriented, presentable, and hospitable.
  • Knows how to guard the boundaries between the tasks of a volunteer and the professional.
  • Possesses good communication skills.
  • Is able to perform physical tasks.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Dutch.
  • Is available for an extended period, preferably at least one year.
  • Is at least 21 years old and not studying.
  • Is available for one half-day (4 hours) per week according to a fixed schedule, and is additionally available for an occasional extra half-day due to illness or vacation.
  • Is available for meetings a number of times a year (mandatory nature).
  • Is computer literate (communication center is via email).

About Maggie's Center Groningen

Het centrum is van maandag tot en met vrijdag geopend van 9-17 uur.
