Extensive contact with businesses, politicians, government agencies, and wealthy private individuals to interest them in sponsoring or subsidizing the chess festival, where personal initiative is rewarded! You can fully utilize your creativity, persuasiveness, flexibility, and ability to spot commercial opportunities in this volunteer work.

The ultimate goal is to create a wonderful festival for chess enthusiasts and a great showcase for the municipality of Groningen.

For the work at Stichting schaakfestival Groningen, this position offers an experience to develop yourself in the field of commercial acquisition, and you will receive a reference for your CV.

Tasks and duties

As a Fundraiser, you enjoy the challenge of persuading someone. Additionally, you spot economic opportunities and know how to align the Chess Festival's angles with corporate and sponsor interests. As a fundraiser, you focus on securing sponsorship and acquisition. Armed with a good story, you hold conversations with companies and sponsors to persuade them to contribute to the Chess Festival. You work together with the Chair of the Groningen Chess Festival Foundation and the Director of the Groningen Chess Festival to coordinate planning and activities, and to refine strategy along the way.

Activities:

  • Building acquisition portfolio, selecting potential 'Friends of'.
  • Acquisition/fundraising: attracting new 'Friends of'.
  • Contribute new ideas for fundraising.
  • Assisting in the realization of communication materials (website logos, social media posts, etc.).
  • Organizing a benefit afternoon/evening.

Skills and qualities

  • Affinity with commerce.
  • A drive to perform.
  • A hands-on mentality.
  • Good command of the Dutch language.
  • Experience in fundraising/acquisition (preferred).

Additional information

We are the Groningen Chess Festival Foundation. A volunteer organization that organizes the Groningen Chess Festival (the second largest chess tournament in the Netherlands). The Groningen Chess Festival Foundation has a chairperson and a treasurer. The foundation works closely with the director of the chess festival. Additionally, a team of four volunteers is active during the preparation phase, and ten volunteers during the event.

In the future, the chess festival aims to grow into a mind sports festival where tournaments and activities for other and modern forms of mind sports are organized.

Working hours: +/- 4 hours per week for 6 months per year. Flexible scheduling and partly work-from-home.
