What does a Debt Assistance Buddy do?
Groningen has many people who struggle with their paperwork and finances. Sometimes they lose track and end up in debt. In such cases, it is of great value to have someone who listens, thinks along with them, and offers practical help.
SchuldHulpMaatje Groningen is committed to giving these people perspective again. We do this with dozens of well-trained volunteers (buddies), who are supported by our coordinators. Together, they offer advice, support, and guidance – and in doing so, give people hope for a better future.
The goal of the support is for someone with debts to learn to solve their own problems as much as possible. Depending on the situation, this can be a long road.
First of all, a buddy gives someone hope that a chaotic – sometimes even hopeless – situation can turn out well again. That provides relief and allows someone to think clearly again.
Afterwards, a buddy brings order to the chaos by creating an overview of income and expenses and by listing unpaid bills. To do this, he or she uses handy tools such as a binder, a household ledger, and a budget.
Next, a buddy creates a solution plan with the person seeking help. Usually, a buddy enjoys the challenge of looking for ways to save money or increase the person's income. Sometimes, for example, someone is unaware of a financial scheme. A Debt Assistance Buddy provides support by investigating this and applying for the benefits.

The board of SchuldHulpMaatje Groningen is looking for a new board member.
We work out of charity and are looking for a board member who identifies with this.
We are looking for a board member for the Communication and/or Fundraising portfolio.
Do you have experience with communication, fundraising – or both – and would you like to use it for people with financial worries in Groningen? Then we would love to get to know you.
As a board member, you can focus on increasing our visibility, strengthening our relationships, and fundraising. Depending on your expertise and interests, you can dedicate yourself to one of these portfolios, or to the combination.
Skills and qualities
We are looking for board member(s) with the following characteristics:
- A passion for our work and for people with financial worries.
- Involvement in societal issues surrounding debt and poverty.
- Affiliated with a Christian faith community and/or diaconal activity.
- Connecting, balanced, and focused on collaboration.
- Driven and focused on quality.
- Preferably experience or interest in managerial duties.
- Availability of approximately 2 hours per week.

In de praktijk blijkt dat vroegtijdige inzet van een SchuldHulpMaatje in veel situaties kan voorkomen dat professionele schuldverlening nodig is. Onze missie, kort en krachtig: • Bijdragen aan een schuldenvrij leven van mensen; • Voorkomen en duurzaam oplossen van schuldenproblematiek; • Hulp vanuit verbondenheid tussen mensen; • Vroegtijdig bereiken van mensen in dreigende financiële nood; • Goed opgeleide vrijwilligers wiens hulp aanvullend is op die van ambtelijke professionals.
