With a close-knit team, you can make a big difference for women trapped in prostitution. Het Overweeghuis is a citizens' initiative and an independent foundation operating as a shelter for 5 to 6 women. This foundation was established because there is no accessible (crisis) shelter available for these women in Groningen if they want to get away for a while or if they have not yet decided to leave prostitution permanently. As a result, they hardly get the chance to be in a calm and loving environment where they can reflect on how they want to shape their future, what other possibilities exist, and how they can achieve them. Het Overweeghuis offers temporary, accessible 24-hour (crisis) shelter with as few rules as possible. To ensure accessibility, volunteers contribute to safety in and around the immediate vicinity of the house. During their stay, they stop working in prostitution; however, drug use is permitted in a controlled manner. The goal is to find peace and provide space for the process of reconsideration.

Tasks and duties
A volunteer is present at the Overweeghuis 24 hours a day, divided into 4 shifts. During your shift, you are the 'safety net' for the 5-6 residents at that moment, in both a practical and mental sense.
All the volunteers are female and range from psychology students to retirees, but everyone has a heart for people.
Your tasks:
- As a volunteer, you are the point of contact for the residents during your shift.
- You have a cup of coffee with them, you are a listening ear.
- Ensures a good atmosphere and safety in the home.
- In addition, you support the women where necessary with small matters such as applying for jobs and household chores.
- During the afternoon shift, there is room to create an activity or daytime occupation.
- During the evening shift, you are responsible for preparing the meal together with the residents.
Time spent:
We require a minimum of 1 shift per week. You can schedule your shifts yourself in our planning system. The shift times are as follows:
- Morning 09:00-13:00
- Afternoon 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
- Evening 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM
- Night 22:00-09:00
Skills and qualities
- Being a real people person (friendly, reliable, patient, and able to create a good atmosphere).
- Being involved (having empathy).
- Self-confidence (staying calm during emergencies, maintaining an overview).
- Standing firm and having clear boundaries.
- Willing to learn and able to receive feedback.
- The ability to think broadly.
Additional information
- Education/training regarding the issues of the target group.
- You are guided by a coordinator.
- If you live outside Groningen, there is a possibility of reimbursement for travel expenses.
- You indicate yourself which shifts you want to fill.
- This vacancy can also be filled as a participation job.
- Given the composition of our team, we also warmly invite volunteers who are older than 35.
