Interesting or nice about this vacancy

Working with homeless people is very special, educational, and rewarding! In addition, you work with a fantastic team of passionate volunteers and collaborate with professionals to create a positive atmosphere in the day shelter.

Tasks and duties

The day shelter at Spilsluizen is a safe place where homeless people find peace, warmth, and attention. They come in daily for a chat, something to drink, and something to eat. Once a week, we serve a hot meal. In addition to homelessness, issues such as addiction, psychiatric problems, and loneliness are also present. Visitors and volunteers connect with each other on an equal footing.

As a volunteer, you work a shift of approximately 4.5 hours.

In addition to volunteers, professionals also work at the day care center.

Our volunteers are trained in a number of tasks: bar work, such as pouring coffee/tea, preparing toasted sandwiches, and serving soup. Having a chat with the visitors is also very valuable, and they certainly appreciate a game from time to time!

In the hallway, the volunteers register who enters and hand out mail to people who ask for it. Additionally, they distribute clothing to those who need it.

Skills and qualities

Do you recognize yourself in this?

  • You like to roll up your sleeves
  • You are self-assured
  • You enjoy interacting with people
  • You do not judge and do not stand superior to another. Everyone carries their own baggage, the contents of which we do not always know.
  • You enjoy working together.
  • You have reached the minimum age of 19

Then please get in touch! We desperately need your help!

Additional information

After you have signed up as a new volunteer, an introductory meeting will follow. If there is a good fit on both sides, we will make arrangements and you will be offered a trial period. During this time, you will work alongside a team of experienced volunteers a few times and get acquainted with all aspects of the work. Afterwards, we will evaluate how things went. If we are both still enthusiastic, you are very welcome to join our permanent team of volunteers. It would be great if you are also available on weekends!

We are open 7 days a week, in the mornings, afternoons, and on some evenings. A volunteer shift lasts 3 to 4 hours.
