Interesting or nice about this vacancy
Intensive, but enriching and meaningful. That is how most volunteers experience their work. It is very rewarding to be able to make a difference for someone else. What is at least as important is that you can learn a lot yourself through volunteering. It enriches you as a person.
Before you start, you will receive training. The training consists of an e-learning component (you will receive 7 online modules that you can complete at your own pace and at your own time) and various practical sessions where we primarily practice conversations. The training takes approximately 4 to 8 hours per week and lasts about 8 weeks. During the training, you will also be guided in practice by an experienced volunteer. Throughout the training process, there are a few moments when we assess together whether the work and the organization truly suit you. After completing the training, you will start working independently. You will also be lent a home phone to use for (night) shifts.
You will also receive training and personal guidance afterwards. Because we invest heavily in our volunteers through training, we generally aim for a long-term relationship with the volunteer, preferably lasting several years.
Tasks and duties
In the dead of night, in the early morning, or on a public holiday. The Listening Line is available day and night, all year round, for people in need of a confidential conversation. Over 350,000 conversations take place annually, of which approximately 35,000 are via chat and email. The Listening Line is called by many different people, covering a wide variety of topics.
- The Listening Line day and night: 24 hours a day, all year round, genuine attention by phone.
- The Listening Line chat: available every day of the week from 10:00 to 22:00.
- The Listening Line email: via a secure email system.
Skills and qualities
You have a genuine interest in others, you do not pass judgment, and you have an open attitude. You are currently stable in life and would like to further develop your listening skills and conversational abilities. After all, a great deal is entrusted to you as a volunteer at the Listening Line. Sometimes subjects you did not even suspect existed. It is not easy work, but certainly not boring either. Every conversation is different.
What do we ask?
Working at the Luisterlijn requires space in your mind, heart, and schedule. You work approximately one shift per week, averaging four hours. You can schedule the shifts yourself. Once a month, you listen at night to people who cannot fall asleep. The night shift naturally demands more of you than a day shift. Yet, it is precisely the stories told at night that make this work special. In addition to telephone support, we are also looking for volunteers for chat and email assistance. Before you start, you will receive thorough Luisterlijn training. Additionally, there is a monthly educational group and training session.
The Listening Line strives for a long-term relationship with the volunteer, preferably lasting several years. This is partly due to the investment in training and guidance.
Opportunities to work from home are open for discussion at all locations.
