At De Blije Bodem, we offer a volunteer position with broad possibilities: as a young project, we are still fully in the development phase of setting up the regenerative self-harvest garden. Just a fifteen-minute bike ride from the center of Groningen, we are trying to transform a severely damaged piece of land into a green oasis that everyone can come and enjoy. We grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, but are also creating seating areas and other structures. As a volunteer, you can therefore help with both the physical construction of the garden and caring for the plants alongside the gardener. We would appreciate it if you would like to set up or create something in the garden with your own idea.

One of our goals is to create an educational garden; therefore, there is always something to learn here. Not only from us, but we also love to learn from you!

The garden is designed as a public, regenerative self-harvest garden. In short, regenerative means that we want to invite a piece of land with little (soil) life to bloom again, thereby creating a green oasis in the city. The public and self-harvest aspects of our garden ensure that, during your work, in addition to contact with our team, you also come into contact with the broad group of participants and visitors to the garden.

Tasks and duties

  • Help with the construction and maintenance of the garden.
  • Building with wood or other natural materials (small bridges, tables, benches, etc.), creating new planting beds, laying paths, mowing, making arches, or other creative shapes. We work primarily with reused sustainable materials.
  • You can also help the gardener with plant care and everything related to it.

We are also open to a more administrative approach: do you enjoy writing copy for social media posts? Or do you like helping with applying for grants and funds? In that case, you are also very welcome to join us.

Skills and qualities

We are not looking for specific skills or qualities. We are open to anyone who enjoys contributing. It is, however, helpful if you can work largely independently after some explanation. We tackle most projects in groups. The group size can vary between 2 and more than 15 people.

Additional information

It is helpful for us if we can make an arrangement for you to participate as a volunteer for at least one half-day per week. This arrangement is without obligation, but we do ask that you let us know as far in advance as possible if you are unable to come. Your arrival will be taken into account in the schedule, and in some cases, the work will be adjusted to accommodate your presence.

We have a volunteer WhatsApp group that you can join if you would like. We also share a weekly sign-up schedule with each other so we can see who is at the garden and when.

Getting there

About Stichting De Blije Bodem

Stichting De Blije Bodem is a regenerative self-harvest garden in Groningen. A 4,500m² food garden for local residents featuring pesticide-free fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We believe that local and as healthy as possible food should be available to everyone. Our gardener grows all the vegetables, and our participants then harvest what they need themselves. We work with a solidarity payment system; anyone can harvest fresh vegetables regardless of their budget. We aim to provide healthy food to up to 200 people. We pay close attention to supporting and maximizing biodiversity; we are turning a depleted piece of land into a green oasis in the city. The garden is fully open to the public; everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this beautiful place. Education is an important part; we are happy to share knowledge and hope to inspire new generations, from vegetable cultivation to restoring complete ecosystems and reconnecting with oneself, nature, and others.
