Interesting or nice about this vacancy
Stichting Hamelhuys, a center for living with and after cancer, is looking for Volunteers for Psychosocial Support in Oncology (VPOO) at the hospital for at least one half-day per week.
Stichting Hamelhuys is one of the 100 national IPSO centers in the Netherlands. At our two locations (Groningen and Assen), people directly or indirectly affected by cancer can come for a good conversation, relaxation, or guidance. IPSO centers are closely connected to other (in)formal care providers and offer tailored informal psychosocial care with a warm, home-like approach, giving them a unique position in healthcare. We work hard on our mission: psychosocial care for everyone affected by cancer, accessible and close at hand.
In addition to our centers, we are also active in hospitals in the region. There, we deploy volunteers to offer patients and their loved ones extra time, attention, and emotional support during their hospital stay.
Do you want to truly make a difference as a volunteer for people affected by cancer? Then this volunteer role at Hamelhuys might be for you.
Tasks and duties
As a Volunteer for Psychosocial Support in Oncology, you are present in the hospital and offer accessible, non-medical support to patients and their loved ones. You always work in coordination with formal care providers and are a valuable addition to medical and nursing care. The patient is always in control.
Your tasks include, among others:
• Actively and respectfully approach patients and their loved ones, with regard for their values, wishes, and needs.
• Offering time, attention, and a listening ear.
• Accessible information and collaborative thinking regarding non-medical questions.
• Working as a bridge builder between the patient, their loved ones, the hospital, and regional care and support organizations.
Skills and qualities
Who are you?
You are empathetic, committed, and a good listener without judgment. You are approachable and sense what someone needs, even if that is primarily silence or presence. You can handle vulnerable situations while maintaining your own boundaries.
Experience in healthcare is not a requirement; life experience and the right attitude are at least as important.
Additional information
What we offer:
You work in a unique and learning environment where, together with your fellow volunteers, you can truly make a difference for patients and hospital staff. You work with a great team of coordinators and volunteers. You develop your talents through training and peer supervision, including specific hospital training that prepares you for working within the hospital and collaborating with healthcare professionals. An informal atmosphere where you can be yourself, and where person-to-person contact is central.
We require availability for at least one half-day per week. Would you like to know more or are you interested? Please email or call Josje Hamel at info@hamelhuys.nl or 06-34339384.
